ETN is a membership, non-profit association which brings together the turbomachinery community for power generation and mechanical drive applications in Europe​.

ETN addresses the main challenges and concerns of gas turbine users in committees and individual projects, composed of experts across the entire value chain: power generation and oil & gas companies, OEMs, R&D institutes, suppliers, service providers and technology consultancies. It has a wide international network and experience in coordination, communication and dissemination activities on EU and private funded projects.

ETN believes a common strategy and research effort between all stakeholders, along with supportive EU energy and research policies, will enable growth and increased competitiveness of the gas turbine sector in Europe and globally.

The university is also well established in the international scientific community.

In the Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Ranking, the UDE is 16th among the top 400 international universities that are under 50 years old. The UDE is also well ahead when it comes to citations of scientific publications: It ranks sixth nationwide and 115th in the THE World University Ranking.

Baker Hughes (BH) is an energy technology company focusing on turbomachinery & Process Solution for energy and industrial technology applications, having a strong competence in Turbomachinery & Process Solution for energy and industrial technology applications. The CO2OLHEAT application will be developed inside the BH’s product company “Turbomachinery and process solutions (TPS)” based in Florence (IT).

The TPS organisation collaborates closely with the customers and partners around the world to innovate and deliver differentiated products and full lifecycle services to optimise availability and reliability in mechanical-drive, compression, and power-generation applications. Built on a deep technical expertise and a proven ability to execute large, complex projects, TPS offers some of the most advanced technology and service solutions. As an OEM, Baker Hughes has an in-depth knowledge of its technology. Its long-term service agreements, innovative digital analytics, asset monitoring control systems, and condition-based maintenance help Baker Hughes’ customers reduce operating costs and improve productivity.

Politecnico di Milano is a public technical university established in 1863, nowadays organised in 12 departments and a network of 6 Schools of Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design. The number of students enrolled in all campuses is approximately 40,000, which makes the Politecnico di Milano the largest Engineering School in Italy. The research activity pursued at the Department of Energy spans a wide range of thermo-fluid-dynamic and chemical processes required to convert primary energy sources (including fossil, renewable and wastes) into useful forms of energy (electricity, heat, synthetic fuels) in stationary and mobile plants. The participation to the CO2OLHEAT will be assured by two research groups: LFM (Laboratory of Fluid-Machines) will support the design of the turbo-expander by applying a hierarchy of tools for the design and optimization of sCO2 turbomachinery, from mean-line models to high-fidelity CFD; GECOS (Group of Energy COnversion Systems) will provide support to system optimization, cycle configuration definition and off-design analysis.

SimeROM is a private company active in the Romanian and Eastern European markets since early 2000s, and it is part of Sime Group. Sime is an Italian Based Privately owned Engineering & Construction Company operating in the Oil & Gas Industry since 1989. It is the head company of an International Group of Companies, fully owned, that can count upon over 300 employees, two manufacturing plants in Italy (Rosignano and Porto Recanati – GI&E) and several engineering premises in Italy and abroad. Sime Group is active in Romania with 2 Operational sites, being the Bucharest Site its largest operational location, and through a local Commercial office in France and in the United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi).

Sime Group’s core business is providing Engineering, Procurement & Construction services for O&G industry, for both On-shore plants (Gas & Pumping Stations, Petrochemical and Power Generation) and Off-shore (Platforms, Floaters and Subsea) applications.

Among its main products, Sime can list Preassembled Process Modules (for Gas & Oil treatment), Reciprocating Compressors (GI&E brand), Subsea Systems.

Brunel University London is a campus research intensive university at the outskirts of London. It was founded in 1966, and its distinctive mission is to combine teaching and research excellence with the practical and entrepreneurial approach pioneered by its namesake, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Brunel is a medium size university with 16500 students covering most higher education subjects in three colleges. College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences, College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences and College of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences. Research is facilitated by 5 interdisciplinary Research Institutes that address five strategic challenges and promote high-impact growth, drawing on academic expertise from across the University and external partners.

The five strategic challenge areas and their corresponding institutes are:

• Communities: Global, Secure, Connected Communities – Institute of Communities and Society
• Digital: Digital Futures, AI and Big Data – Institute of Digital Futures
• Health: Planetary and Human Health and Wellbeing – Institute of Health, Medicine and Environments

The research is undertaken through a number of University Research Centres and research groups.

Brunel University London in the last Research Assessment Exercise (REF), undertaken by the UK Government in 2014, came 32nd out of more than 150 universities in the UK in research power (government funding based on performance in research in the REF). It also has the 32nd largest volume of funding from the Research Councils UK (UKRI) and the 12th largest from Innovate UK. The University also performs well in terms of EU funding with the 13th largest volume of funding by UK universities from the H2020 programme.

The Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) is one of the largest Research Centres in Greece, located in Thessaloniki and founded in 2000. Its mission is to promote the triplet R&D&I, by conducting high quality scientific research and developing innovative products and services, while building strong national and international partnerships with industry and Academia. CERTH is essentially self-supported, with an average annual turnover of ~ 25M€, coming from: >60% competitive research projects, >30% bilateral industrial contracts, and only <10% from government institutional funding.

Over 1,000 people work at CERTH with the majority being scientists. CERTH has received numerous awards and distinctions and is listed among the Top-20 EU Research Centres with the highest participation in H2020 competitive research grants. CERTH consists of 5 Institutes, out of which Chemical Process & Energy Resources Institute (CPERI), with a wide experience in the Sectors of Sustainable & Clean Energy, Environmental Technologies, Chemical & Biochemical Processes and Advanced Functional Materials, participates in CO2OLHEAT project.

Heatric, a division of Meggitt (UK) Limited, is a technology company specialised in the design and manufacture of diffusion bonded heat exchangers, including the Printed Circuit Heat exchanger (PCHE) invented by Heatric’s founding members in 1980. These diffusion bonded heat exchangers are used in the most demanding duties across power generation, LNG production and shipping, marine propulsion, oil & gas production, high performance cooling, and process industries.

PCHEs are very well suited to the demands of sCO₂ recuperators power blocks as the typical criteria for such product are a combination of high thermal performance with the ability to withstand high pressures and temperatures combinations, all of this in a highly compact envelop to minimise footprint and facilitate integration power block for new plants and retrofits.

Heatric main office and support factories are located in the UK, where all CO2OLHEAT activities will be conducted, and will bring its experience in dealing with similar complex projects and applications.

ENEA is the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development. Established on 1952 as the National Centre for Nuclear Research (CNRN), it is the second major Italian research organization, with around 2500 staff employees distributed in its 9 research centres. The Agency depends on the Ministry of Ecological Transition and, since its foundation, its strengths lie in applied research, technology transfer and technical-scientific support to companies, associations, territories, central and local administrations.

ENEA’s mission is to develop new technological solutions to meet the societal challenges, fostering the transition to a low carbon economy. Its focus sectors are low carbon energy technologies, nuclear fusion and nuclear safety, energy efficiency, technologies for cultural heritage, seismic protection, food safety, pollution, life sciences, strategic raw materials, climate change. The ENEA’s Lab of Engineering of Processes and Systems for Energy Decarbonization has a long duration engagement on experimental facilities and modelling activities related with energy conversion processes and, since 2013, began the research activity on supercritical CO2 power cycles.

ENGIE Laborelec is a leading expertise and research centre in electrical power technology. Drawing on the skills of 280 highly specialized engineers and technicians, the company is active on the whole electricity value chain and backs a large set of customers in the fields of generation, transmission, distribution, storage and end-use, with a particular focus upon the energy transition and the 3 Ds – decentralization, decarbonization and digitalization. DF commits to achieving carbon neutrality before 2050, by pursuing or implementing three types of action: reach net zero, or almost zero, direct CO2 emissions, reduce our indirect CO2 emissions and offset residual emissions with negative emission projects.

The EDF Divisions implicated in the project are EDF Research and Development (EDF R&D) and EDF Ingeum. EDF R&D covers all business lines and activities in the energy sector. In line with EDF CAP 2030 strategy and EDF raison d’être, it focuses its research efforts in four key areas:

• Develop and test new energy services for customers,
• Prepare power systems and electricity networks of the future,
• Consolidate and develop competitive and zero-carbon generation mixes,

• Support EDF international growth by developing research and industrial partnerships

To meet business needs and find solutions to major research challenges, EDF R&D has created a network of more than 300 partnerships in France and at international level with universities, research institutes and industrial partners. EDF Ingeum is one of the engineering divisions of EDF. This division draws on its practical expertise in plant and network operations and on our innovation capabilities to improve the performance of non-nuclear production facilities.

MYTILINEOS S.A. – Metallurgy Business Unit (former Aluminium of Greece-AoG) is the leading industrial producer of alumina and aluminium in South-eastern Europe.
