Project structure

CO2OLHEAT project will last 48 months – from June 2021 to May 2025.

It is divided into nine Work Packages (WPs) that are mutually related and thus encourage cooperation amongst the partners.

Work packages

WP1’s main objective is to model the system which will be integrated and demonstrated in the real industrial environment of Prachovice (CZ) cement plant. This system includes the demo plant layout, analysis of its integration, demo cycle optimisation and off-design analysis.

The developed models will be tailored for several energy-intensive industries and will be applied to business and replication activities. They will mainly involve market scenarios, definition of boundary conditions and interaction with electric grid.

WP1 starts at month 1 and ends at month 24.

The CO2OLHEAT power block compression will be performed by a turboexpander unit composed by a compressor and an expander operating on the same shaft line. This unit faces several design and operational challenges which will be addressed in this work package. The main objectives of WP2 are to:

  1. Identify and propose a conceptual design the turboexpander unit that satisfies WP1 requirements
  2. Model, design and manufacture the turboexpander unit for CO2OLHEAT demonstrator, including its auxiliary systems
  3. Create a model of turboexpander unity dynamics and construct a robust control strategy for its operation
  4. Study an upscaling strategy for the turboexpander

WP2 starts at month 1 and ends at month 42.

WP3 will cover the design and production of the net Power/grid connected 2MW sCO2 turbine. The main objectives of this WP are:

  1. Perform the design of the sCO2 turbine able to properly interact with the overall sCO2 power block (following requirements defined in WP1, and in strict interaction with WP2, WP4 and WP5)
  2. Supply the sCO2 turbine unit for CO2OLHEAT demonstrator
  3. Define and lay out control and protection logics for the sCO2 turbine
  4. Perform studies for potential upscale of the sCO2 turbine

WP3 starts at month 1 and ends at month 42.

WP4’s main objective is to:

  1. Design and supply a waste heat recovery unit/WHRU (to provide heat to the power cycle) and Air Cooler (to remove the residual heat after power conversion)
  2. Design and supply the power cycle recuperator
  3. Execute an upscale study and deliver guidelines

WP4 starts at month 1 and ends at month 40.

Operational flexibility is one of the key advantages of sCO2 power systems compared to Rankine-based alternatives (Steam/ORC).

In this context, the objectives of WP5 are to:

  1. Define flexibility requirement of the CO2OLHEAT power block to account for heat load fluctuations at the Prachovice demonstration site
  2. Develop dynamic simulation models and investigate control strategies to safely and efficiently operate the CO2OLHEAT unit (startup, shutdown, load changes, emergency shut-down);
  3. Identify hardware and software required to integrate the controls of the CO2OLHEAT subsystems with the power block, and Heat Recovery unit
  4. Implement the sCO2 controls on the CO2OLHEAT demonstrator
  5. Develop and validate monitoring strategies for CO2OLHEAT facility

WP5 starts at month 1 and ends et month 48.

WP6 aims to:

  1. Test in a real industrial environment the integration of the CO2OLHEAT concept
  2. Understand health and safety impacts of retrofitting with CO2OLHEAT
  3. Enhance the industrial plant’s energy, economic, and environmental performances as well as considering additional revenues from selling the electricity
  4. Determine the benefits of the sCO2 cycle by benchmarking against other types of WH2P turbomachinery in terms of enhanced turbomachinery efficiency and reduced LCOE

WP6 starts at month 18 and ends at month 48.

With a strong connection with WP1, replication studies and assessment studies will be conducted to identify best deployment strategies for CO2OLHEAT solution. Thanks to the replication feasibility studies many aspects related to regulation, social acceptance, lifecycle assessment will be considered.

WP7 starts at month 12 and ends at month 48.

The main objective of WP8 is to define effective strategies for communication and dissemination of the project activities and outcomes to the potential user community and business partners, scientific peers and policy makers as well as non-scientific audience. To this end, this WP will establish effective communication means, channels and platforms.

Clear go-to-market strategies for products and services will be developed and disseminated in an action plan outlining the target audience and how this technology can achieve competitive advantages for different markets as well as its environmental positive impact.

WP8 starts at month 1 and ends at month 48.

The main objective of WP9 is to perform project governance and to establish and maintain a communication and controlling infrastructure. All tasks will be accomplished by using state of the art management instruments and methods. This should facilitate an unobstructed and successful project and research evolution.

WP9 starts at month 1 and ends at month 48.
